Thanked: 28eschers and belgian yellows
I have an escher (dark gray) and I keep hearing about the yellow green escher...Ive never seen one before...is it a finer grade stone than the dark gray and if so does it finish the razor any better? Also are there different grades of belgian yellows and if so how does one go about getting the best grade of escher and the belg yellow?

IIRC
I had done some reading that stated the difference between blue Belgians and yellow Belgians was the concentration of garnets.
Blue 30%
Yellow 40%
As I say this was Belgians and I'm not sure if it applies to Eschers.
Once I've bought one of every hone ever produced I'll be sure to let you know what the difference really is.
Next week..... next week....

Thanked: 9Um no - you won't. There is much individual variation between stones - so you will only be able to compare what you have. I know, doesn't sound too good.
Now some answers - yes, there are different grades of Belgians. Howard should know more (he buys only the top grade - Select for razors).
It seems that y/g Eschers are softer than the gray / blue ones.
This reply is just meant to give some basics - until people who know better chime in

The garnets in the blue belgians are also larger than the garnets in the yellow coticules. The yellow coticules cool faster than the blue so the garnets have less time to grow.
