Just kidding, they are there for a purpose and are useful, love the square point.

As said do so lightly, you will want it back… someday…
Ya, I've heard horror stories of trying to trim nose hair with a square point.

Well, being a novice shaver too, the point still caught my a couple times and it was styptic time.

So, is it okay according to the generally accepted protocols of the SRP honing handbook to slightly blunt the tip so it is not so much of an assassin? Or do I keep it sharp and wait until I can wear my big boy straight pants?
I am a proponent of the "Big Boy Pants" route. I have numerous proper spikes, It will teach you a light stroke, improving your skill and always be there to remind you to keep your mind focused on (literally) "the job at hand."

Some people deliberately dull their edge on the rim of a glass before beginning honing. It has no long term effect on the life of the blade as it is only a miniscule deformation of the edge. That is the scale of dulling that you can do to that spike point. It doesn't need to be done to an extent that you can even detect it with the naked eye. If at some point later, you'd like to pull up the " big boy pants," you easily can hone the spike back in.
