Missing something like what? Am still new to this and thought that smaller jumps should be easier to get a good hone with. What would you leave out?

Where is situa you have like 3 different finishers that you are going through. If you were to say just use the coticule and maximize it then I believe your edges would satisfy you a little bit better. Probably what I would do is do the 1000, 3000 and then go to the coticule with slurry. Then finish on plain water.
For me it's kind of like once you are on a finisher it's finished. So there's no need to have 3 different finishers. I'm not saying to get rid of anything just you don't need all of them for every razor. Let them be other options. I like barbecue and I like ice cream but they don't go good together not on the same plate. Or perhaps a 1k, 3k, bbw, coti.
What I meant about what you are missing is your missing the edge. It wasn't ready before you moved on to the next stone. That could have been as far back as the bevel which is very likely that you missed it and if you missed it then nothing else is really going to hit right. So you keep piling on stones trying to fix something when it may just need a little more time at a previous stone.
And 8000 great stone may prove to be very beneficial for you. 1 / 3 / 8 / any of these 1 finishers that you have. But only 1. Yes that puts the b_b_w kind of on the back burner for now. Some people do use them for finishers some use as finisher some use a pre finisher.

Ok. Will try one razor finishing on coticule. One on purple and one on welshingian. See how it goes. Think my bevel is ok. Shaves arm hair off 3000 every time. Only use 1000 if got micro chips or similar. Couple of blades I sent out had such wide fine bevel that they had micro chips after three or four shaves. using with double bevel at the moment. Thanks for your advice.

It should shave effortlessly arm hair. If you think it's set I suggest to do again. And maybe again.

Just look straight down on the bevel with magnification. If you see shiny reflections, the edge is chipping, or not fully set.

Shaving arm hair tells you nothing about the, whole edge.

Your chipping issues on pro honed razors may be from stropping with too much pressure.

Will see bout some honing solution at some point to improve even more. Also tempted to try oil. Would ballistol or similar work?
AJ once recommended something called GT 85, which appears to be a country cousin to WD 40 and its ilk. I have never tried it. Had a Welsh slate once. Decent rock. I prefer others though.

    dmnc,

FYI - you can get GT85 from Halfords (probably in the bicycle section).

I have just got the AJ 'tri-hone' pack, and am currently flattening them - the '12k' LM is certainly harder than the '8k DT' and the '15k LM', and my well worn 325 'grit' DMT8C is having a bit of a time of it !

I have got a 220/325 'grit' Duosharp plate coming, so that should speed things up

    Have fun

    Best regards
