Thanked: 5are they similar?
are these stones offered by lee valley comparable to the nortons?
4000 grit (7" x 2.5" x 0.5")

8000 grit (7" x 2.5" x 0.5")

forget the prices (they are pretty dead even...buying these two stones is $0.50 cheaper than a 4/8k norton, $68.00 vs $68.50...they're a bit smaller, but single stones usually cost more)
are they just a generic brand waterstone or do they cut differently? will they serve the purposes of honing a straight razor equally well? any one have experience?Last edited by edk442; 04-21-2007 at 07:34 AM.

I highly recommend just purchasing the Norton. Many members use that stone so when you have difficulties in honing there will be someone to help you. Nortons are very consistent stones and can efficiently put a great edge on any razor. If you are concerned with the price you should purchase the stone from Howard and theperfectedge.com for $62. If you purchase those stones they may or may not be good, but I highly doubt they will be better than the Norton since if they were that good I would have heard of them by now.

Thanked: 5i will be buying a norton as it's a respected name and are consistent stones and the price is the same for a bigger surface in a convenient combo stone. i will buy it from lee valley as i can get it locally and it will be cheaper in the end. (no shipping)
