Gold Dollar 66 honing
Just short question:
I need to hone my new GD 66 SR. I have read that it is advisable to hone GD with tape, because of possible damage of spine. Is there any truth in this theory?

Thanked: 2591You can opt for tape or no tape, it is up to you.
On ornate spine razors , tape will protect the spine from damage during honing. People use tape on plain spine blades to prevent hone wear.Stefan

IMO Gold Dollars are better honed without tape. The spine is normally too thick on them and hone wear improves the geometry.

My GD 66 I bought for honing practice has some serious grind problems. I have put it on a 400 grit stone and grinded the crap out of it and its still off. Have you used the magic marker test? Is the bevel nice and even all the way across?

The problem with GD razors is the shoulder and stabilizer area. Most, at least the ones I've dealt with, from factory won't lay flat on hone, tape or no tape, because the geometry is far from correct especially the shoulder area which needs to be ground down. The quickest way to fix the problem is grinding, I used a Dremel with grinding wheel, but you have to be careful of the heat generated, could ruin the temper thus ruining the razor. Once the shoulder area is corrected they will lay flat on a hone and take a pretty good edge and are decent shavers.

on gd watch for stableizer hitting. grind in back(heel) of blade too thick requireing more honing there and even warped plades which i have to correct with rolling x stroke. people told me it wasnt ideal to learn to hone on and they were right. but after a months worth of not knowing what was up and frustration. it shaves lovely.

AND... when you get done, Look at the shoulders and the end of the spine. Unless these are a bit unsharpened? or to say, make sure those areas are not in any way sharp or your strop will, all of a sudden, get scratches and a cut and frayed near edge!
Not only GDs though, any razor needs this care.
