    Default working out a chip

I have a Dovo Best carbon razor and am new to using a SR. I damaged the very tip of the toe while stropping. I rolled the edge and when I put it on a 12K stone to deal with it, a chip was left on the edge right at the very end of the toe. I have worked most of the chip out using a Norton 4K and 8K doing a pyramid (3 and 3; 1 and 3; 1 and 5). I repeated this a few times and then finished on a 12K stone. It shaves fine but there is still some of chip visible. It is apparent to the naked eye if one looks very closely but does not effect my shave. Since it is shaving fine, I am not going to rehone the razor until it needs it. However, what is the best thing to do now? Go further down the pyramid (beginning with 25 and 25 perhaps) or should I do some circles on a 4K or 8K stone followed by the pyramid? It seems that it is best to do the least to solve the problem. I am guessing that I am not the first person to do this and would appreciate any suggestions you might have. Thanks a lot.

I would keep working on the 4 k until that chip is out completely and set ur bevel on the 4 k correctly before you even think about moving up to the 8 k ..it may b a slow go on the 4 k but it's absolutely possible.. Do u have a 1k ? The pyramid is very capable of giving you a shaveable edge but number one priority in the pyramid style or any style is setting your bevel.. Once that bevel is 100 pct set and edge damage removed then you could try a pyramid starting with 10 see how it feels ..if it's not quite there then do five down.. Get that chip out ur gonna tear ur face apart!!!

You should have continued until the entire chip was out. if you want to remove it you need to remove metal. The higher grit you use the longer it will take which means you will have to go down to the 1K or 4K and rehone the razor. If the chip is really at the edge you might be able to hone just that area. That will depend on exactly where it is and how deep it is. If it doesn't affect shaving you might just want to leave it be unless it just bothers you.

A picture would help a lot.

Given what the OP described, I'm not sure that is very likely.

A photo would help, but the chip should come out with your bevel setter, however many laps it takes.

Were I an old hand at this I would have done precisely that but I was concerned about doing some serious damage to the blade due to amateurish technique. What I did to the edge worked insofar as it feels fine when shaving. I did not do any damage to it so I think I can now go further. At this point, I am not feeling the chip but I know it needs fixing. I wish I had the means to include a picture but I don't. I do have a 4K. My question would be whether it would be better to do a circular motion on the 4K or perhaps it does not matter. I do appreciate everyone's feedback. It helps a lot.

No, I don't have a 1K but I have a 4K and am patient. Thanks for the input re where to start the pyramid once the chip is out. That helps a lot. Many thanks.

A 4K will do just fine. Any stroke will work either way, you have to get to the bottom of the chip.

Check the edge looking straight down, to make sure the bevel is completely set.

You don’t have to do a pyramid, especially if the rest of the blade is shaving.

Just remove the chip make sure the bevel is set and remove the 4K stria with your 8K and the 8 with the 12.
