Thanked: 0Thanks Uacowboy!!!
It certainly does make a huge diffirence. The two stones I have are Llyn Melynllyn (Yellow lake) and Dragons Tongue.
I am going to sound naive, but what do you mean by "you to really pay attention to how they are working"

it is kind of a getting to know the hone. some are faster cutters than others some leave smoother edges. some just don't get along with some razors for no conceivable reason. basically it all comes down to them being a naturally formed stone and therefore the composition is not perfectly uniform. I have a purple welsh slate hone that i am still trying to figure out and stone that is from up in Canada that i have been able to get amazing results from right from the start.

Thanked: 3215For synthetics it is not just about grit size for razors, the binder and how it releases is just as important, if not more so.
Many synthetics are great for knives, but will not work well for razors. Good, well known performing razor stones are not that pricy and really all you need is a 4/8 or 3/8k combo.
If you use un-proven stones you probably will not get best results. There is a reason, everyone uses the same stones.
Naturals are just that and may not even be 4K, you are just rolling the dice. Learn on good synthetics, then experiment with Naturals, just because someone had luck with X natural stone, does not mean you will.
