    Default Severely Warped Edge Help

I have honed warped edges before, but nothing this bad. It has a straight edge and is a near wedge. I don't know how I didn't notice it before. If you hold it up to a light and look down the length of the edge you can see it. Everything I have tried doesn't work. Rolling X works for one side, but the warp is so bad that the other side doesn't work. It ends up scraping the corners of the stones. One layer of tape didn't help and two layers either. With two layers the tape was making contact about 1/3 into the concave. Tried narrowing the tape, but that didn't help either. I was thinking since I usually hone toward a smile on most of my razors anyway to just modify this on to a smile since I can't think of anything else to do. It is a 9/16 so didn't really want to have to put a smile on it, but if that is all that I can do so be it. I didn't think near wedges could warp this bad with that much metal. Maybe it was just poor grinding that made it curved I don't know. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A picture would help us to see what your saying. Warped and straight edge in the same line kind of confuses me :<0)

By straight I mean no smile. I think I will give it a slight smile. I took a sharpie and marked the edge to see what it would look like and it doesn't look bad. How the bevel looks after creating the smile will be another matter, but as long as I can put an edge on it that is all that matters to me. I tried taking some photos of the curve, but couldn't capture it with the camera.

On second thought I might send it off to someone else that is more experienced than me and let them handle it, but I'm the type of mind that likes to work out the problems myself so I will know what to do next time or atleast an idea of what to do. Might have to just set it off to the side for now till I figure out what I want to do.

Okay now I get it. A smile might compound the problem. Watch the water as you go across the stone and make some gymnastic moves to see if you can keep the part of the edge you are missing on the stone, pushing or cutting water off the surface as you go. You may have to do some slight tilting or some pressure here and there to keep it down. Taping in layers can be an answer. I looked around for a vid. I know one is out there. I view a warped blades as needing to be rocked during a lap. Easy to say hard to explain how I do it because I don't do it that often. As I recall the easy side is the side like the bottom of a rocking chair. Getting something curved onto a flat surface is where the gymnastics come in.

Go slow try it. If it doesn't work out , THEN throw in the towel :<0)

If you have any real narrow hones, that might make it easier.

Extra tape and a rolling x stroke usually can take care of most anything, use a magic marker to see exactly where the edge isn't making contact. Good luck!

    Move the heel farther forward..

Start at about a 45 degree angle and go farther if needed this will usually get the edge fully in contact with the hone as it moves..

Watch the water wave, if you lose the wave you have lost the edge
