Thanked: 2209New guy from Bahrain
A new guy came to my home today to learn how to hone straight razors. He is the 8th guy this year. He is an exchange student from Bahrain named Ahmet. He brought along 2 Gold Dollar razors. One was sold to him as shaving sharp and the other was for a friend of his. They both came from straightrazor.com
and both had the thick/extended/protruding shoulder which makes it difficult to hone! What the heck is the matter with straightrazor.com
that they sell a defective razor? The defect is well known in the razor world and the honorable vendors of GD's grind down that defect before they ship to a customer. I had hopes that straightrazor.com
would change their ways but that does not seem to be the case.
The rest of the story....both razors had an edge but not very good. Ahmet was experienced with shavettes and said his GD had never shaved him as well as the shavette. After we looked at the bevel under the microscope I could understand why. The scratch pattern was coarse and had of a couple of angles to it. This applied to both GD razors. My conclusion was straightrazor.com
tried to hone the GD on a spinning disk like Dovo used to do to create the bevel but then no more honing was performed. Rod Bell came over to help me as usual and we both honed up the GD's for Ahmet. One thru a Coticule finish and the other thru a very nice thuringen finish. Then both edges were polished on a chrome ox paddle strop of Rod's. Ahmet was impressed at the edge.
After that we took a vintage razor and had Anmet learn how to hone from the 1K stage on up. He spent about 45 minutes doing the actual honing himself with Rod and me guiding him along the way. He did pretty good!
Ahmet has 3 final exams at the U of M this week then he is flying back home to Bahrain. I am glad we were able to help him out.Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

Thanked: 1184Read an article about the guy that owns/owned that site. He is a site builder and seller. In it for the buck. Has a business model and morality has nothing to do with it.
Not the same I read before but you get the idea DNSeattle Keynote: The Shave Network – Building a Real Business on a Premium Domain Name – With Luke WebsterLast edited by 10Pups; 05-13-2015 at 02:51 AM.
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.
