Thanked: 13245The biggest issue with the answer is people refuse to differentiate between
Honing vs Edge Restoration
They require different techniques, hones, and pressure

57vert,
+1 on GSSixgun's post
Here is one of mine that had both correction and 'standard' honing.
A few weeks ago, I started a honing session on a vintage tamahagane kamisori. This razor, by the look of it, had never been honed - the edge was very, very rounded, and the spine sides were not parallel with each other, or to the edge of the blade. There was no hone wear at all.
Correcting these deficits took me about three or so hours of intense effort (The tamahagane was extremely hard, and I didn't want to excessively wear the soft 'jigane')
After that, the actual bevel setting and honing to finish took less than 30 minutes
Have fun
Best regards
Russ

had an awesome Smiling near wedge blade that was so blunt it was safe for a baby to play with, take over 4 hours for bevel set alone with a Nami SS 1k on the week end loved it
I don't have HAD but I am seriously looking at some DMT's now LOL for the heavy grinding on them wedges
can usually get a 1/16" chip out of a full hollow in about half an hour with bread knifing then bevel set
yet did 3 others (full hollows) complete from bevel set to done in about 1 hour
so yes it is very dependent on the blades condition to start withSaved,
to shave another day.

" I only have +/- 50 razors under my belt"
I would consider a safer place to store your razors, but YMMV.

at the moment, far too long. i have honed all of the easier razors in my collection, taking up to an hour on each one from bevel to shave ready. but i have three currently going that are giving my the sh!ts. a wade and butcher wedge that feels like i have to remove a ridiculous amount of metal ( 4 hours and counting)(same problem as substance's wedge) a smilng 3/8 hollow ground bostwick, (6 hours) and a hollow 6/8 boker zenith (2 hours) that i have to keep going past the pitted metal further and further as it pops through in different places, once i have passed one, it pops up in a different spot along the edge. so far i can't get any of these three to remove any hair whatsoever off the 1000 stone.
i keep persevering, i will beat the razors!

are you using a loop or some magnification to check the bevel also
I know my W&B wedge took ages with 3 or 4 layers of tape to get it shaving
but my ODC has since kicked in & said I must reduce it to 1 layer also so it is a side job in the honing box so each session I spend a bit of time on it, grinding away I think it will end up with about a 1/4" bevel when done
unless I give it a regrind & hollow out between the hone wearSaved,
to shave another day.
