Mentor/Group in South Texas

Hey fellas,

So I took the plunge and purchased a set of Naniwa hones to begin taking care of my own straights. I love the videos by Lynn & others and have followed them as best I could. After a few swings, I am finding that a little time with a seasoned vet would go a long way.

I am in San Antonio, TX and was wondering if there was a group/seasoned honemeister in the area that wouldn't mind schooling up a noob. I am prepared to pay for your time in bbq or fine whiskey.

Any advice/resources for a beginner would be great as well. I am well acquainted with the video library but anything beyond that would be a huge help!

First off, welcome! I live around Houston so I am a bit too far (and still a noob myself!) away to help. Even if there isn't anyone nearby, I have found this forum to be great about answering lots of questions

Welcome to the group! Hopefully, someone will be able to help you out. I'm about an hour west of you, but do work in San Antonio, so it's nice to know that there's some fellow straight shavers in the area.

As far as honemeister goes, I'm far from it. I've maintained my razors, (and woodworking tools for that matter), for years with a basic set of stones, leather strop, and the the occasional 3M fiber optic polishing paper, and have never had an issue getting smooth, comfortable shaves. However, after following this site for a number of years, I've finally convinced myself that a Naniwa 12000 grit stone is almost a necessity, even though I've never used a razor that was honed past an 8K stone.

BBQ and fine whiskey? I'm sure someone would take you up on that. It would quicken your progress for sure. Other than that, I would watch lots of honing videos and get a cheap decent razor and practice, practice, practice!
