Angry Honing Trouble with Turner & Co

    hi everybody,

after tried 3 hours to hone a TURNER brand straight razor. i came here to have some advice. i bought this razor as restorated, and exactly like a butter knife. once i honed it, i thought it was ok to shave. so i put it in a drop and forgot. tonight when i wanted to test. i realized it does not shave/very painfull. so i took it again. first, i used 1500 with 6 layers of tape. not better. so go back red DMT, hold the spine 10°, not better neighter. then i get down and take blue DMT hold the spine a little more and i see it goes barely better but still not cut arm hairs. i continue with red one for a while. then go back to 1500.

i tried this procedure for 1h (return back to red one, try again blue, continue with 1500 and go back to red DMT ...) nothing make the bevel to go further. but anyway i continued once to see if something may be changed. so 2k > 4K > coticule, final result is bevel is not sharpen.

well after 3 hours to work with a blade like this one, makes you tired and the hour is 1 AM here. I stopped for today and gonna take it back tomorrow. but i really don't understand what can be wrong with the blade/my processus. and what to do for it shave. i've already honed many razors before, so this is not my first time. but with this razor i can not find the solution.

i add some pictures for you see the blade. and i will appreciate any advice for get the bevel sharpen and better than a butter knife.

May want to try a 1K stone for setting the bevel to get to the set quick. Maybe even a 400 to cut through the metal fairly quick then go to maybe a 1K then 4k then 8k then a final high grit synthetic or natural stone like a Escher to finish her off.

Did I understand you used 6 layers of tape. Maybe I am missing something but I thought a single layer is what a razor is set on.

But then again.............I could be wrong. I am sure those who are masters of honing will chime in. Good Luck.

Blue dmt is about 320. I even tried to go with 4 layers of tape at the first time ( not today) it just gave me a large hone wear. That's why I tried this time with 6 layers. But just right now I ask myself to put 4 layers of tape and go with red dmt until to set the bevel/ edge. ?

Wedges or razors with lots of hone wear sometimes takes more, six layers is a lot though. I usually start with two on a wedge and see how it goes

I tried with 2 layers and 4 too, but nothing better. When I hold up the spin and hone it with the 1500 ( honing like a kitchen knife) the edge gets sharpener but I don't think it's the good method for a razor.

Some, news, actually the blade was not ready at all to hone. It was too thick. So i fecided to send it to a pro. He confirmed me he did a lot of work otherwise it was impossible to hone. Now I'm waiting to receive it.
