    Default Refresh Lap Count

All three of my daily shavers need a refresh. For that I use a Naniwa 12000 Super Stone. I have in the past used about ten no pressure laps and then evaluated after a shave.

Any thoughts on a no pressure lap count for the 12000, as a basic rule of thumb.

10 is fine as a basic rule of thumb.

Is ten the right number if using a hard coticule; or a fine Scotch hone like a white Tam O'Shanter or a Water of Ayr? If so, am I doing any harm with 50 no pressure laps?

no worse edge wise I think mate
you are mainly just wearing away more steel for nothing that's all
I think the TO'S will be a lot coarser at 8k or less if I remember right than 12k SS also
    Saved,
    to shave another day.

I use 8-10, "weight of the blade" (but stay in control)

If the razor was honed with a layer of tape you need to have a layer of tape on...
And I am always shocked at how well this works...

Why not just give it a go and see, if 10 isn't enough do another 10 before the next shave and so on until you either get the result you are looking for or have reached the 50 laps you currently do.

The hard coticule likely can do more. The W of A you probably could do more. The Tam would be a little more coarse but I have no idea have many strokes it would take to max out the edge but I don't think I'd do maore than 15 or 20 for a touch up. The naniwa 12k is more fine but quite aggressive and that is why 10 is more likely to be sufficient for it.

I have had good luck with a 10,5,3,2,1, 21 half lap progression, a la, Ax Method, (Alex Gilmore) with good results.

As said the 12K Super stone is aggressive.
