Happy Halloween!
Today's line up:
Attachment 217221Attachment 217222Attachment 217223
The first three razors from left saw a full synthetic treatment, the last two natural progression.
Didn't take a pic, but touched up a little ivory scaled MAB with G20 & followed up with a thuri slurried coticule. Pretty good shave, but needed a little bit more. ONe more touch-up should have it back to where it should be.
Nice thread!
Erik Anton Berg on Shinden Suita tonight. Sorry for pic quality, will do better next time.

You little fun remover fun removal mashine'
That word tripped a song in my head.............thanks RusenBG, it will probably be there all day.
Nothing too serious today, just some light bevel correcting of a Dovo on my 4k. I'm getting it ready to use on a coticule that's in the mail on its way to me courtesy of our one and only Geezer!

Some light honing to refresh the edge on a few tonight after dinner.
The little eskilstuna took to the CF, The Oxford and Pilot German blades kissed the thuri.
All three were finished on .25 diamond on brushed leather board strop.
Used a Coti for slurry on the Thuri, then worked to dilution.

All came back very nicely.
Cheers.
Anybody hone a Helejestrand made of Stainless??
Attachment 217447Attachment 217448
It getting the better of me. White scaled one.
Chosera1K, Coticle(tried 3 differnt ones). Thuri slurry on the coti made some head way.
Naniwa 5K , Washita Ark White and a Guangxi are incoming.
They are finishers and conventional wisdom says do most of the work at bevel set.
Might break out the Norton1K and spend time there.
Advise welcomed. Hardest steel I have honed.
Not hijacking, pictures of the Washita and Guangi later today.
Advise and ideas are actually not hijacking..
I started this thread not only for pics of Razor and Hones,, as John pointed out we all love those hehehe :D
But it also becomes a resource of how many people accomplish many things while honing :)
Now personally I agree with you about the Swedes ig: not just Helgies
I have found them to be rather hard steels and in SS you are adding the abrasion resistance there too..
The Gaungxi or PHIG has become my goto finisher for Swedes over the years,, also I tend to head straight to the Naniwas either the SS or the Chosera/Pro to deal with hard chippy or finicky steels, So IMHO you are heading in the right direction :p
Hone-estly Tom, I don't have any more hones to hono-graph. I guess I could go into some other thread and jack some pics of other's hones and say they are mine. Lately I'm liking the boxed vintage hone thread...nifty stuff. And the Jnats are Hone-tastic. I've been thinking of polishing a hickory nut, I guess I could start a thread about that...if it turns out nice. Which is a thread killer BTW, YMMV...har har.
OK, challenged me...here's a box that a hone came in and a tiny wedge razor that came in pink scales...regrettably the scales were damaged. I wonder if this was a ladies razor? I'm kind of attached to this hone.

Oh yeah, and some micromesh sticks. Almost forgot...if I have to do a half gainer with a triple salchow followed by a slider to hone a razor I just get rid of the razor :p
Hey can we get someone to make up some razor related smilies? This is the only place I use the silly things.
Ok guys, you are very correct Glenn.
It took the Ole Norton 1K ,Both sides of the combo Coti, and a e bay blessing in the form of a Washita White that well is a good one.
My Guangxi is included.
Pictures tell what thats going to take to square up.
Lastly layers of tape and how much wear they went through to get this razor into fighting condition.

A "Paddle of Ducks" :)
I simply love honing Dubl Ducks, they are so straight forward and take these awesome edges so easily :D
Chosera 1-5-10 finished on a Blue/Green Escher starting after the 10k with a light slurry and diluted as I went but still leaving a touch of slurry for the final laps

I wish the others today were as easy :p

Choser1k. Set the bevels on these 3 (Bengall cast steel, Bengall imperial with double sided etching and Wade and Butcher) and started a 4th but needs work as was hitting the stabalizer. These have been waiting a while and it feels good to finally make a start. Only 3 more to go now.
Touched up my Cape 2000 on a Nakayama karasu.
WW243, this razor also had pink scales from light exposure, two tone Pepto Bismol pink in fact. It had probably been put back in a coffin with the end cap missing at some point and continued to get "pinker" on the exposed end. Re-scaled in beautiful honey horn by Alfredo Gil. The razor is a daily driver, the blade has some pits here and there but shaves really well and is one of my favorite everyday razors.
Cheers, Steve
On hard, chippy razors, I have had good luck by jointing/killing the edge lightly on the corner of the next stone in the progression, then stropping on a Sailcloth Poly Canvas chrome oxide strop,10-15 laps to remove any micro burrs on the corner of the jointed edge, then moving up to the next grit stone and re-set the edge.
I usually do this on the 8 & 12k but sometimes after the 1k for real hard steel so I am building a straight edge from the beginning and not giving it a chance to chip. I expect any Chrome Oxide strop will work or even a good linen.
My theory is with chip prone razors, the straighter I can make the edge before starting on a higher grit the less chance of a micro-chip left over from the Jointing, to continue to chip. So the edge is straight and smooth, and the new stone is cutting evenly across the edge, the bevels meet quickly once they are flat.
The standout razor of this morning
Simply a beautiful Hoffritz Barber's King so sweet on the hones, Chosera 1-5-10 the on to the Zulu Grey started with a light slurry, really brought out an excellent hazy finish by the time I was done :)
Don't see to many of this but they sure give up a nice edge when I do :p

Hone on Gentlemen !!!!
The Chosera 1k for the last 2 nights try to get the last 4 razors bevels set. H.M.Christensen and a Torrey the artist. The artist was a tough mother and took forever. Haven't come across steel that hard in a while. Tonight 2 Bengall 5/8s both honed nice and easy.
After all the bevels were set got the Bengall cast steel and honed on a La Grise coticule using dulicot. Been waiting for ages to hone it up and looking forward to tomorrow's shave to see how it goes.
Nice stones and razors guys, here are a couple tuned up Twin Tanifujis.

Another set of twin Tanifuji Silver Steels - like Mike, I found these razors will take and hold the finest of edges.
Cheers, Steve

Strange about memory...here is a pic of the scales. I remember them as pink and the Madman of Philly called them pink.
Attachment 218076 might just be the monitor...but yeah, they could have turned! Aieeeeee
Well Tom, I edited the above post after I looked in my archives for a picture of the Plumacher.
Tarkus did the rescale. If he didn't do such an amazing job, I would want to rescale the little wedge in that cool fake tortoise...forget the name. Anyway...hey, did I get the pink scales from Tarkus, huh, did the rascal rescale the Plumacher so he could cannibalize the scales!
Here is the masterful work of Tarkus. Original were celluloid, prit sure. Double thanks to the Big D
Here is the big and small of it on an out of the box 8K naniwah...

Today's hone session started with a trip to the mailbox. The coticule geezer sent me arrived. I had seen pictures but not of the bottom side. It turns out it was a combo coticule. An added bonus. The bbw side was horrendous. DMT dia flat to the rescue. That puppy was tamed in 30 minutes.
I took it to a Dovo 6/8 which I was working on and pictured it earlier in this thread. Dulled the edge on glass, slurry to get it shaving arm hair, diluted the slurry to a watery slurry, 30 x strokes. Added a layer of tape, 30 more laps, rinsed the coticule and finished on water. 50 x strokes put some soap on the Coti and 25 more laps. Just to get a sense of what this coticule had to offer. It's slow on slurry, you can feel the abrasion, not a creamy coticule by any means.
The shave went superbly, smooth and close. For a first run at it, I'd call it a success. Although I didn't just dilute the whole way in the end does it really matter?
Nice Coti Scott!
I love my bbw combo. Big part of my rotation of stones. Geezer sent you a beaut!
I too am wanting to add a chosera 1k to my line up. That and a DMT 325 for the really tuff ones.
It looks quite nice! I am a firm believer that a nice, larger Coti is paramount to success with them.
Enjoy!
Thanks Mike! Next meet up or if we ever hangout for a bit ill bring it. I wasn't thinking it would provide a nice non pulling shave because of the feel under the blade. Really different feel then I'm used to.
I forgot to add to the last post, that I didn't use a loupe, I didn't check scratch patterns, I only use 2 tests. Thumb pad test and shave test :) that's how I hone. Optical devices...
Attachment 218227
At least I didn't tonight..
Come on sharpton you don't need a big Coti to be successful I use a 3x3 with great results too. It's all what someone's used to :)
