Someone spent some time making this box for my favorite natural combo.A brass hinged,velvet lined,dovetailed mahogany beauty.Stone is 9x2-1/8, razor is German made for Ernst Forst and a great shaver.
Our very own Gasman requested some help with one he just couldn't get to lock in. Looked it over a few minutes, and decided on what I call a 2+1 taping.
Hone wear was even for each side, but progressively getting wider towards the toe. Strategic placement of overlapping tape evened out the bevel for the proper, original bevel. Though we now have a double bevel, its even.

I set the bevel on a Chosera 1000, then progressed with a Washita, Coti, Lt. Blue Thurigan, and finished on a Dark Blue Thurigan. Jerry prefers a crisper edge, and this little Thurigan brings that to the table, in comparison to the B/G Escher I typically finish with.

Thanks Glen, I also forgot to mention, that I also trim the sides of the tape so its just below the hone wear. This keeps the hone from riding on the side of the blade face.Quote:

I imagine this question has been asked before, but Mike, what kind of electrical tape did you use on Gasman’s razor? Is it just red standard tape or is it a different thickness?
How does one duplicate these tape tricks from honing to honing?
Unless it is a show piece it will need to be honed again.
I see an issue with repeat ability.
U keep a log on these specific blades, or just look at the spine wear. I looked at the bevel on Jerry's, being he had sanded over the spine, on this one. I could have made a few passes with a finish stone, with no tape, and judged from there as well. I know Jerry was keeping a log of some sort, so I texted him a pic of it taped, with an explanation, so he could add it to his folder..Quote:

A set of calipers are always handy for checking variables in spine thickness. I honed one for MrZ, that had the worst heavy honed toe, I'd ever seen. From the shoulder to toe of the spine, there was .020 of an inch difference in thickness. I have a few different thicknesses of tape, some simple math. And layered the pieces of tape, last one covered the length of the spine. I just built the spine back up to its original state. It played out a beautiful tiny bevel, that shaves a dream. Z says its still his best shaver.

U can see the new bevel near the toe, too much glare to get the rest to show up.
