Playing with a Shapton Glass 16k. Shave was close, but the edge was a tiny bit uncomfortable, but not unpleasant. Went from a naniwa 8k to the shapton 16k. A pleasant surprise considering I picked up the hone for woodworking tools and not razors, but what the hell, right?

You might want to give a gander at this thread https://sharprazorpalace.com/hones/1...g7-update.html . It may explain why the 16K Glass Shapton may produce an uncomfortable edge.Quote:

I'm trying to put my money were my mouth is with the Norton 8k lately. For years it was my "Let's strop and test now to see where we're at" hone. The last few edges I've gotten from it I don't even feel the need to follow up on with my usual finishers (Naniwa 12k, trans and sb arks, thuri these days). They were surprisingly sharp and smooth-BBS with negligible irritation from the alum block.

I may just keep a few recent rescales at the Norton 8k level to keep things simple. (But then, I've got a very special hone coming from ebay that will bear much testing!).

I took a few days off (I won't get into it, but my job sucks right now and I'm taking some time to decide whether to stay and fight it out or to walk away), and for the first time ever I actually had the time to get through ALL of my honing "to-do's".
Left to right: Puma Special 89, Heljestrad No. 23, Henckels Friodur 72, Hoshi Tombo 6000, Bengall, Wade & Butcher Celebrated Hollow Ground, Heart Columbia 77. I also honed up my Rolls Razor. Most of the razors just needed a touch up, but the Bengall and the Heart Columbia needed some chips to be repaired, and the W&B needed the full shebang as the edge was in rough shape.
The Naniwa 12k is new to me, I just got it a couple weeks ago. I'm very impressed with this stone, it lives up to all the hype: it's very fast and gives an incredible polish. The I've been experimenting a lot with the big thuri (I think that's what it is, anyways), it's a really nice finisher. I'm trying to figure out a good balance between these two stones to get the right mix of keenness and smoothness, which I'm pretty sure is what everybody else is looking for, too.
