Love finishing razors on this blue-green Escher (just enough label to tell) I picked up from Tim Zowada in the area formerly known as Classifieds. Before hitting this awesome natural, I started out lower than usual on the Naniwas (5-8-10-12) given the Carbonsong steel. I'm looking forward to the test shave tomorrow when I have a bit more stubble to mow down.

5 in for the weekend back out Monday only one gave me a little problem the Filarmonica 14 came with a nasty little chip in the middle of the blade all sorted now.
My choice of honing music this week as been a blast from my youth the great album Transformer by Lou Reed.

Honed one of my favourites tonight. My Hart steel custom.
Took a while to set the bevel. I was having trouble with the middle of the blade even though it removed ink.
I realised the Chosera 1k needed lapping as it was dished out .
After lapping it took no time at all.
I began my progression with the Tsushima Nagura, then through the others , all the way to a DMT slurry.
Its popping hairs like a mad man at the moment , ill shave tonight with it.
One thing I noticed is how fast my Nakayama took away the 1k scratches . The other night I honed a different 01 steel razor and the 1k scratches didn't really get gone until the final Nagura.
Maybe different tempering techniques makes for harder steels?

First time on the stones in some time today.
Tried my hand at the jnats. This little Tomo from Tom does not want to give up its slurry very easily I must say.

This old family heirloom Boker for a friend of my daughter, and this WB Rattler may still see the Escher before the day is done.
Test shave first.
Cheers.
Looking good Mike. My hone of the day was a fun one. Picked up these 2 razors from the flea market. Pulled out the three amigos and first time through wouldn't you know. Im getting good at this honing thing. 2 years ago I wouldn't know what to do. The shapleigh had a frown that I fixed on a not pictured fine India stone. After the frown was corrected it honed up very easily. Attachment 255027Attachment 255028Attachment 255029
VC (Victory over Coticule) day!
So I spent the day buffing the tar out of most of my natural stones with a cotton wheel and chromox paste. Eventually this included the coticule. Yes, I have burnished that which usually ought not be burnished! And finally got a DFS out of the Germania Cutlery Works razor honed on the stone while I was at it.

Had a one on one honing session this week w/ new SRP member and his Dovo.

Finish on Y/G Thuri. Did DOVO's quality just take another drop?

Happy with this thin bevel.

No whiskers left to test it with today though.
I dropped this Aust off an end table and put three dings in the edge. Tonight I finally got past the dings doing circles and x-strokes on a Naniwa 5k, then x-strokes on a Naniwa 8k, 12k, and finally a Thuringian. Not shown is the Wade & Butcher I touched up on the 12k and Thuringian.

It must be contagious..
I honed and shaved with my Hart blade the other day and it was truly special.
Afterwards I thought I'd Mass it, oil it and save it.
When I'd finished , the edge some how banged into my finger nail.
The edge is totally destroyed , ha, that'll teach me /:
I think it is contagious. I just had it happen to a John S. Holler "Tower Brand" #54. I was storing it in an old razor box and the lid didn't fit tight at all. I picked it up at an angle, razor slid right out and got a ding in the edge when it hit the table. Spent some quality time honing that one out on the 4k side of a Norton. Then I went and put a layer of masking tape around the end of the box where the lid fits on to snug it up.
Thanks guys.... It's so "liberating" to know it's "not just me" when it comes to dropping the &*($#&@-@# razor. :soapbox:
That said, I do feel for ya'll as I know all too well the feeling! :chapeau
Regards
Kaptain "fumblefingers" Zero
Ha it contagious all right. Luckily I dropped a gold dollar and due to the heavy spine it landed spine first with no damage. Well a good nick on the finger on the way through but blade was fine.
Honed up my brothers "Not A Replica" blade tonight.
Did it yesterday but the heel had a few shiny spots which bugged me all day today.
I realised that it wasn't a vintage, needing rolling strokes but a different animal, more delicate in some respects due to its micro chipping.
The whole blade is honed to the very edge. Done on the Maruka with full Nagura progression (only way I hone nower days) finished with a DMT slurry that gave it a devastating edge.
I only wish I was gonna shave with it, my bro is lucky :)

Just got this w&b 5/8 wedge back together. This blade took every trick I have which isn't many. Put my 1/4 Norton's through the paces. I started trying to set bevel on the 1k struggled so I decided to go right to my 4k. Things turned for the better, after some time on 4k finally got bevel set then 8k and finish on 12k ss. 3 layers of tape and lots of hard times finally got it.
So freaking Wicked Sharp

Was able to get an excellent edge on this Frederick Reynolds Hump back tonight. Used a new Coticule I just got in the mail this week from Scott. Can't believe he parted with this thing, cause it's magical!! Haven't even put this on my vintage shell yet and the edge is already crazy.
Scott, you're crazy for selling me this thing. But I do appreciate it.
Attachment 255540
Interesting. I told him I was interested in that Coticule when he was trying to sell it with a lot. He said he wouldn't split the lot up. Then he said the stone wasn't for sale. Oh well. Glad it went to a good home. That's a great looking Frederick Reynolds too.
Everyone was after it, but I had told him right when he bought it that I wanted it. :)

A bit of maintenance honing with the Suehiro Gokumyo 20k. I touched up my two 7/8 Thiers Issards, a MoSoSo 15/16 and a Dorko 13/16. In the morning I am shaving with the Bijou de France which I will strop on the Kanayama #70000.
Good honing Gentlemen. Bob.

Good morning Gents! This is the last night's exercise, now let's see how she shaves! The hone is an unknown Kiita I recently acquired. Edge refresh was done on Mejiro, then this piece of Uchigumori tomo I got from Vasilis. Still one of my favorite nagura. Easy peasy, this Taihei was cooperative all along.

1st time honing this little smiler. Just a touch up on the Naniwa 10k and Gok 20k.
Didn't need it but was dying to see how such a smiler would hone. I was a little apprehensive beforehand but once started I could have gone on forever.:D

Got this jnat to test for my friend who's just getting into honing. Purchased blind, this was a nice deal, for a huge stone. A bit of a gamble... could be a dead rock. My impressions are, mmmm nice earthy smell, a bit softer, still kinda hard, resembles of a Nakayma koppa I own, but it could be from anywhere. Crazy patterns, very pretty to look at. Yellow and green blending into one another, the surface is very consistent, I can't feel any inconsistency at all. Sharpening feeling is velvety, soft, on slurry it's creamy, even softer, just heavenly.. Super fine feeling. The red lacquer was a great choice, gives it some contrast. Now what's beneath that lacquer is another question, but I'm not gonna dig that deep. The dai is nice and clean, light, though cracked at one corner. I assume this is an old rock, so maybe that's normal.
Now the Puma was already through mid-range, just needing the finish. I went with moderate slurry, diluted a bit, as the stone soaked some water. Made around 50-60 strokes and called it finished. Had a shave this morning, so I can't exactly tell much about the edge, but my hair tests felt promising. Will see in a day, or two!
Found a few chips in this Wosty. Took it to the Washita and water, then to a Fast & Fine, barber hone with lather, finished on a Ahconite, Barber's hone with lather. 40 passes cr/ ox, 60 leaded linen, 60 Russian tanned, 60 shell.
Floats thru arm hair, we'll test shave in the morning.

Test shave was incredibly smooth, and exacting this morning.

One of the best razors ever produced in Solingen: Sahara Gold - Camel Rider. Honed and finished on my finest vintage Tamagoiro stone.
Attachment 255644
I got this razor NOS - without any bevel set, dull, didn't cut any arm hair. Set the bevel on a 1000 king. Within 5 minutes on the 1000, the razor didn't even cut arm hair but also a HHT 3 was possible with a little stropping on linen/leather. Unbelievable - did not get this with any other razor I ever had. Another 5 minutes on the tamgoiro with some slurry and a few strokes on water only and the razor was shave ready. The razor is extremely thin grinded. The sound while cutting hair is unbelievable. Keenest razor I ever had in my face. But also very smooth and forgiving. Absolutely perfect shave!
First time ive seen a NOS Sahara Gold.
Congratulations :tu
Did my T.I Spartacus tonight.
Getting to the whole edge (under the scope) took some time but I got there.
I wont shave until next Saturday , should be good.

Last nights honing was a heckuvalot of fun.
The ERN and Morley needed a full bevel set, went Naniwa 1k, 2k, 5k, 8k and 12k
My "Beater" Razor and Schmachtenberg were touched up on two different cotis.
I am slowly working on getting chips out of a Case razor I got in a lot awhile ago. They're about 1/8" long and will reduce the width just outside of the shoulder. I think I might break out my carbordium which should have a 320ish side
I bought it from a maker in Japan. I'm very happy with his knives. His name is Watanabe.
