With all this arkie talk going on I decided to pull out the translucent.

Took a Hess 44, across the rocks today.

Bevel set..1000 Chosera.

2, Hard/ fine, white Arks, unburnished with water 1st stone. 2nd, Burnished, with honing oil.

Black Ark, unburnished, with oil, then burnished side, with oil.

Twenty passes on Cr/Ox pasted strop, leaded linen, Russian tanned, red Latigo, bridle, shell, finished on Tripoli, boar hide.



Test shave in the morning...

Another for the giveaways.
6/8 Negus, German made, full hollow.

Bevel set on 1000 Chosera.
Progression:
Washita and water.
Lt. blue Thurigan, slurry, diluted to water.
Two Coties, slurry, diluted to water.
Finished on B/G, Barbers Delight. Water only.



Test shave this morning was flawless. Crisp, yet buttery smooth. A perfect 4 pass, BBS shave, gents.

Looks like an awesome progression. The Barber's Delights are legendary-wish I could find one on Ebay for less than 5 Benjamins, though.

I did finish that last Crown and Sword rescale on the Zulu Gray with 4 Escher slurry dilutions with about 20 strokes apiece (using my 1x5 Celebrated Water Stone as a slurry stone), then 20 more apiece on plain water, then with a drop of Dawn, and finally with glycerine and water. Stropped about 200 strokes across my rack of shells to cordovan, and she feels about perfect on my finest arm hair. Will test shave tomorrow before giving it to the young man I mentioned. Lately this technique is giving me my smoothest edges.

I do get a twinge of jealousy when I see everyone playing with naturals. Now and again I might get them out if I have the time but for most of the time it's Chosera 1k, superstone 5k, 10k then cro ox or Gok 20k depending on the type of steel.

The feeling on the skin, with Nats, is more than worth the time spent honing, IMHO. My face still has that numb feeling. !!

Take it to 12k synthetic, then finish on your Nat of choice, for quicker results

That's what I do when I get a chance but off the 10k then natty finish.

Yep, I jump off to the naturals from a maxed-out Nani 12k (sometimes a Norton 8k depending).

But I get the appeal of the SG20k. About 6 years ago Utopian Ron showed up at the Asheville, NC meet with a dizzying array of hones including his SG 20. He was kind enough to let me finish all the razors I had brought on it. Easy peasy just like the Nani 12!

If I didn't have such an obsessive personality (it can be both a blessing and a curse), I would probably do the same thing. But I always hear that little voice telling me, "What if I did...."

And that's the appeal of naturals, I think-each one is a mystery to be solved, a little at a time.

The 20 is a fine finisher and i do enjoy it. But my Jnat journey is turning out to be a lot of fun. Just fine tuning now.

One day I'm going to pull the trigger and get another one of Keith Johnson's shoubodani complete honing kits with all the nagura including a koma-it would be my third, never should have sold the other two. J-Nats are fascinating and I definitely want another one. I can see me getting bored with the Zulu Grey at some point just because it's so easy.

And my buddy CJBianco has a glassy Deep Rock coticule that I have demanded the right of first refusal on. The search continues...
