Thanked: 1Honing or Stropping?
I got me a grim blade straight razor 6/8 and to be honest I am getting pretty tired of having it shipped out and shipped back in for me to shave. I wanted to know how I can do it on my own! One fear of mine is not doing it properly and having my razor go to waste! I once sent it out to get it honed and to be honest I wasn't pleased since the second time I used it the blade was plucking my facial hair! Can anyone tell me what is better honing or stropping? Also what technique to use to make it razor sharp? Please and thank you

Thanked: 3226You should strop a razor before every shave as part of the normal maintenance routine. You need to hone when the blade no longer shaves well even after stropping it.
This section in the forum's library should help explain the two to get you started Category:Straight Razor Maintenance - Honing & Stropping - Straight Razor Place Library .
There are also vids on YouTube that will show you how both are done. The best way to get started learning is to have some one on one time with a member in your area if possible. If you put your location in your profile there may be a member close to you that would be willing to do that.

Hi Aztec
Bob is right. Get with a local SRP member and do the hands-on. Best move you will make at this time.
It would help if you would put your location over your avatar.
Here is a link to find members in your area.

Aztec87,
Sadly you started on the wrong foot. These grim razors are amateurishly made and are sold by people who know nothing about straight razors and more about domaine name hoarding and shilling .
A lot of neophytes will sadly fall into this trap, be it with poor quality razors or cheap melt and pour shaving soaps, PAA comes to mind.

Thanked: 3226I had heard about Grim razors and their reputation but did not mention them because I have NO first hand experience with them. A quick net search will turn up first hand experiences with them though. At the very least learning to hone on one will not ruin a good razor.
