Thread: 3 layers to 0 layers

My Dovo I honed yesterday I ended up with 3 layers due to setting the original bevel on 2 and then added one to finish. Today I said no way in hell am I going to add 3 layers of tape to touch it up when I need it.

I dullled the edge on glass so it wasn't shaving arm hair. Looked around my bathroom and spotted a swaty. So I started honing and ended up with an edge that could shave arm hair cleanly. Took about 15 minutes. I then proceeded to dull the edge again because it felt torn up on the thumb nail. Didn't take it any further today.

My main question here, will I be okay? I believe the bevel is set, or is 3-0 layers a massive jump. The two layers of tape weren't there because I needed them.

Maybe tomorrow I'll get one. I don't think it would be a problem it's got even hone wear from me. I've been practicing honing with it for months. Not sure what the pics would tell you?

Dovo is a name which surpasses 50 or 80 years, I think. Many to consider along the way as well as modern ones.

The pictures can be considered as advice is given. Cannot see 3 or 4 layers on any Dovo. Pics would help?

I'm not being critical but is there a reason why you started with two and added a third in the first place? If it wasn't something you needed or intended to maintain, that's a problem. Removing tape is keeping the edge from the hone.

Glen gssixgun has said (and made a video about it) and many of us proved that to go from 1 layer to none takes 5 minutes on the hones especially after you have used the razor for a while. 3 layers? Not sure but I would think you would be just fine.

The true answer can be seen with your loupe. If the bevel goes from the shoulder to the edge all is well and you have cut off what you need to. If you have not accomplished your task there should be a line in the bevel somewhere near the edge.

Yea, should be able to see with a loupe if you still have a double bevel. You could also use a black marker on the edge and a swipe or two on the hone will show you what if any parts you are not getting at.

When removing a chip or a frown I have used as many as 5 layers of tape then went to setting the bevel. you can always remove tape if the bevel is not enough. a loop would show you a lot. Now I'm not an expert on honing just telling what has worked for me. The tape I use is the scotch 3M .0085 vinyl electric tape. If you hone several razors and use tape on them all you can color code the tape as to how many layers you used on that particular razor. anyway just my thoughts.
