Additionally, if you fear the little thumby protrusions contact with the razors edge you can fold back your hand and you'll see lots of rounded protrusions with which to clean a razor with, then rinse your off hand, which can bang on the faucet all day long. My fav area is the entire side opposing the thumb, you can slide the blade outward from your hand without ever sliding your hand/thumb down the edge. That thought even concerns me a little, yet it is perfectly safe.
Dylan-for once your very wrong, your not the slowest learner.

I once put a big chip right smack in the middle of a nice razor edge. I'm talking 1mm wide and just about as deep. You could see it from across the room. Aaargh!!! That was my best razor too. Well, I kept shaving with it like that with no ill effects as long as I was reasonably careful. I shaved with it like that for years until I found SRP and learned a lot. I finally worked up the nerve to hone it out. I started with 1000 grit wet/dry paper on a marble block. Got the chip all the way gone and honed the razor back up to shave ready. I didn't tape the spine so I did incur a fair amount of spine wear, but the razor shaves just fine now.
My recommendation is to just shave with it if you can. Practice honing on ebay specials and keep learning until you have the confidence to fix it. In the end it was very satisfying to know that I brought that razor back to a nice edge again.
