I've inherited some and bought some. I picked up at 1K/3K Suehiro combo for $30AUD, it's been great at the low end, I need to get another one, I'm thinking around 8K. I have an Escher (very good quality) to finish on.

If it can't be fixed with one good J-Nat and a set of Nagura- It's not worth fixing in the first place. I set bevels and finish on the same stone fairly often, and I don't need to limit myself in hone usage. A good J-Nat will have good range, the nagura extends it lower. Everything else is a luxury of speed or chasing a new level of perfection. time is money, so when doing a lot of edges- a range of stones can greatly speed things up.
Alternatively there is the Gokumyo 20k one stone method, the most impressive synthetic IMO.
Good advice on the strops and pastes too. Lynn's .1 Micron Spray is impressive stuff if you go that route.
Even water can both gently lap and polish stone and crush mountains. Time is the great equalizer.

Thanked: 77I just hit up all the antique stores and yard sales in my area. I've never paid more than $10 for a stone and the really high grit stones are not as hard to find as you would think. Just be ready to do a lot of lapping.
