    I was going to suggest sodalite looking at the pic and the fact it's from North America but I only know a little about minerals. I'm sure I must have some in a box somewhere and I'm almost sure I have some of the tenebrescent, faintly in this case, hackmanite but I'm not going to lap it to try and make a hone because it's far to soft for my liking.

    Yes corundum is found in the U.S in many forms, it is a common mineral but not blue stuff like that. If that was corundum it would be sapphire and the only commercial sapphire in the U.S is yogo gulch Montana and they are little xtls rarely larger than a carat or so. Try rubbing it with a piece of quartz and see what happens if its harder than quartz that will narrow it down quite a bit.
