More honing ?
I spent a little more time on the hone and got my old razor a little better but when I go back to the L.A. honed Dovo I get a little depressed. I looked at the edge with my cheepo RS scope and found a little pitting on the edge. This looks like a nick at first but on higher power it is pitting. Do I just hone on the 4K untill it is gone or do I just frame it and put it on the bathroom wall? I shaved with it tonight and it just dosnt shave like the Dovo. I think after looking at the blade under the scope I could hone a razor with a good edge to start with, the bevel looked like the ones in the pics untill I get to the pitted area. I am thinking a Dovo "Best Quality", 5/8 at around $55.00. This would give me the best possable chance to get a good hone job and hopefully boost my confidence a little. Please comment My shaves are great I need help with my next objective, honeing.

Thanked: 346You learn more on the hard razors than you do on the easy ones.

Don,
A little pitting on the bevel won't actually hurt the shave, I don't think. The problem with pitting near the edge is that it weakens the steel and can cause it to chip while honing. If you don't have any actual chips, then it might be OK.
If you really want to get rid of the pitting, the easiest way to do that is to get some 1K wet-dry sandpaper, tape the spine, and do maybe 50 laps. Check your progress periodically with the microscope and stop when it looks like you've gotten all the pitting. Then do some laps on the 4K to polish out the coarser scratches before starting your pyramids.
Most new razors seem to have decent bevels, but sometimes you get one that has to go back to the 1K anyway.
If you'd like, I'd be willing to set the bevel for you on your vintage blade for no charge. That might give you a nice baseline to work from. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.
Mparker is right, as long as you try to figure out what's going wrong and don't just blindly repeat the same thing over and over.
Good luck,
Josh

JoshEarl thanks for the offer and I might take you up on it yet but first I am going to try a little more. I think I have the ability to get this an I am not one to loose to a little bit of steel.
