Thanked: 5Norton lapping stone?
I have shapton glass water stones, 220-16000 and I need/want to lap them. Is the Norton lapping stone a good one to get, I don't care to drop $300 on the shapton lapping stone. Thanks.

Thanked: 3795No I do not think the Norton lapping hone is a good choice for the GlassStones. I have never tried mine on my GlassStones but think it is too coarse to be a good option for this set. The Shapton DGLP is awesome, but it is not necessary. You can use a cheaper diamond plate to do the same job.

I don't have the Shaptons but I use a DMT325. It works great for lapping my Naniwas and Nortons and Just as useful for edge repairs and setting really stubborn bevels. It leaves a smooth flat surface on the hones. I also sharpen knives on it occasionally. Well, kind of. I'm not very good with knives. It's a great tool that does many things well. If you get one, sharpen a couple of knives on it before lapping your stones to get rid of any high clumps of diamonds.

Thanked: 1184Bejay is right on the DMT except I wouldn't use a 325 on anything higher than 8k. Think 1200. IMHO if I spent that much on the set I would go with the lapper they make for it. I don't have them but from what I have learned :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanked: 481You spent all that money on a shapton system, don't go cheap on the lapping plate. DMT 325 or maybe* Atoma equivalent. I don't even like using the Norton lapping stone on Norton hones now that I know better. It's too coarse, and not true-flat unless you've lapped it somehow.

Thanked: 3795If you are willing to spend the money, the Atomas are awesome. Specifically, they are much much more uniform and do not produce the random scratches caused by the DMT DiaSharps.
Also, a nice feature is that you can replace the diamond face for about half the cost of a full replacement plate. I have yet to need to do this but it is good to know that it is available.

Its great being way lighter than the dmt and able to be used without the holder so true up with the 400 and flip and smooth with the 1200
