    Default First honed razor

First, I want to say a big thank you to nun2sharp for taking time on Saturday to meet up with me. I learned a lot of little things from just watching him and having him coach me and show me better ways of doing things. Thanks to him, tomorrow I'm going to have my first shave with a razor I honed myself. Words can't express the gratitude I have for him mentoring me.

Congrats, that is the best way to learn honing. Hope you have a great shave.

Awesome! Very cool of him to help you out. You'll soon see how satisfying it is to shave with an edge that you honed yourself. Congratulations.

Congrats, the first shave off of a self honed edge can be a real treat.

Thanks to "nun2sharp" and all the other guys that are helping out our newer honers and shavers out there.

The razor I honed was a Whisker Razor 4/8 made by Fletcher Hardware Co. I think it needs a trip back to the finishing stone. It shaved with no tugging, but the blade felt a little harsh compared to my ralf aust and I didn't get as close of shave from it. Any suggestions?

Most honing problems come from misuse of lower grit hones, rather the finishing hones. Specifically, the most common issue is that the bevel is not fully set.

Got my setup of Naniwa hones today. I lapped my chosera 1k, 5k,8k & 12k. I immediately refreshed my first blade ( Boker red Injun ). I proceeded to do a pyramid of 1-3 /1-5 laps on my 5k & 8k. followed by Cromox strop to leather strop. I picked the Injun because it was not very sharb But, seemed to have a good bevel under a scope. Blade shaved sharp and smooth. I'm very happy tonight. Hopefully, I can set a bevel and go thru my progressions on a couple of ZY430's I have coming. I purchased them to practice on. I know the setting of a bevel is the real work. Glad to jump in the game and get honing right away. Picking up a polishing machine tomorrow and am on the prowl for some vintage blades to turn into nice shavers. Fingers crossed.

Shaved with it again. The hairs come off easily enough, but the shave is still a little rough. Might just be my technique with this razor. I don't hear the hair coming off my face with this razor like I do my other ones.

It could just be as simple as not being used to a 4/8", if not I would guess bevel not completely set and a bit more time on the 1k
