Thanked: 1Restoring a blade on a vintage SR
Hey everyone,
Pictured below are photos of a vantage straight razor I'm ready to bring back into shaving condition. My only question is how should I go about removing those two small chips? I have a Norton 220/1000 grit stone to use. Should I use the 220 or the 1000 side? And should I do circles?
Thanks in advance!

I would look at bread knifing the heal at 45° angles lightly on the 1k to remove the chip, then set the bevel on the full blade on the 1k as normal
Saved,
to shave another day.

Thanked: 634Cover the gold with tape and polish the rest of the blade. Then do as substance said. Should make a nice shaver.

I dislike the term breadknife.
99% of the time its not needed.
Like Substance said, go at a 45°angle and work the chips out.

If it were mine i would breadknife the heel then use about 3 layers of tape to work the chip out of the blade honing as usual then remove the tape and retape with one layer and set the bevel. Each has there own way.

I agree those look like they would come out with the razor at a 45 instead of a true 90 degree "breadknife" grinding. Either way will work..just how long it takes you to get it there. I like to go the least aggressive route and evaluate. If it isn't getting it done then think about something else.
Go find an adventure.....

Thanked: 1Okay and what kind of strokes would you recommend at a 45 degree? Knife stroke? Circles? X?

Thanked: 98Charlie, what stones do you have to work with? if not a set to include finish stones, maybe you could send it in for a light restore to Shave ready? There are Gents here that do excellent work and fairly quick turn around. Just trying to help.

Thanked: 4828You would use the same stroke as you would honing for the most part. Glen has a great video series on smiling blades. The video is about a wedge although it is mostly the same regardless of the the of grind.
That will take you trough bread knifing
And the smiling wedge video. I suggest watching the wedge first to get the stroke and then the bread knifing videos.
To check your stroke magic marker the bevel and then do a stroke and see if all the ink is removed from the bevel. It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!
