You can feel the slurry change if you 'feel' for it. For me it's usually about 15-20 strokes or so and you can feel the slurry get smoother.
I don't think the slurry ever breaks down completely because if the tomonagura is well suited to the hone, more grit will be released as you hone. That's not to say it doesn't reach an equilibrium point.

ok did some more experiments today and my best razor was the one i honed using a slurry created form my ozuko using a dmt 325 .
i know the 325 is a bit course for this so i have a 1200 dmt in the mail
my current tomonagura is very soft so im pretty sure the slurry created with it contains slurry from the nagura alone
i dont really have any information on this nagura besides it being soft.
would you guys recomend getting an asano nagura for a more standardised approach ?
and if so which one should i get if i am only planing to use it for finishing ?
again thank a bunch

Asano naguras are not tomonaguras, they're mid grits though koma can easily be fine enough to shave off of. They are intended to be used in a grit progression. Botan is the coarsest, tenjou, mejiro, and koma follow in order.

Go slow buying stones or you'll end up like me. And I've only got a mild case!

Thanked: 168I have a very worn DMT coarse 220 to raise slurry and a box full of tomo nagura from my frend Steve and other sourcess
Now there are ckeap or small diamond plates or sharpeners on the Ebay - 1000 grit - you can rubb them in some hard stone to calm the a and they will serve you well as diamond nagura
The rest is practice , as GSSIXGUN sais nothing compairs to the time spend on the stone by you
