    Default MDF to hone?

I had a coworker today said he's heard of people using pieces of medium density fiberboard loaded with chromium oxide to hone razors. Apparently it has a grit of around 15-20k. Anyone ever heard of this?

I use CrOx on MDF as a refresh strop. Works better than balsa IMHO for the CrOx crayons.
It doesn't work so well with the diamond pastes though.

    That would be considered stropping.

You can put Chrome Oxide on most anything and get a good edge on it.

Good, pure, Chrome Oxide is about 30k, MDF is a good flat substrate, cardboard or canvas seem to work best for Chrome Oxide for me, though as said, most any flat smooth surface will work, results will vary depending on the flatness and give of the substrate.

A harder surface, will cut deeper than a soft one, and that will reflect on the edge, pressure also plays a big part…
