just got an early birthday gift(escher) :))) and some questions about it
hello everyone,
so my wife surprised me with an early birthday gift , its the smallest cutest hone i have ever seen , its tiny yet bountiful .
now i have to ask some questions, and before you tell me to search i already did and have not found all the information i needed , plus i needed an excuse to show off the new stone
so first id like to know if anyone has some more information about this stone , i know it has the Escher & Co mark , but when was it made , what is your experience with this stone if you own one of these , in short the good the bad and the ugly any info or links will be appreciated .
second i view these as a piece of history and i really want to preserve them as good as i can , this includes the wooden box and the sticker so:
1) what would you recommend to apply on the wooden box to water seal it? ,inside and out as the stone is glued to the base of the box so ill be working with it while it is in the box and i am afraid of water damage . would nail polish be ok?
2)i really want to preserve the sticker which already has a bit of water damage , what would you apply to it to keep it protected ? again is nail polish the way to go?
3)any other maintenance tips for this stone, as this is the first that i own that has a wooden box i am a bit paranoid .
i know im asking for allot of info sorry for the nuisance ,but i really trust the info i receive in this forum so i thought its worth annoying everyone

Nice stone and happy birthday. You can use some polyurethane on the label and wooden box to preserve them. Is the hone glued in the box?

There have been several posts where people removed the stone from the box to refinish it, then re-glue the stone into the box.

ok that is also a very good option i didn't consider , and how would you recommend removing it ? brute force ? some other method ? i just really do not want to do any unnecessary damage

It's been in the box this long, what makes you think it won't survive? Poly the label to keep it from degrading, rub some tuna oil on the outside and hone on it. Tc

I wouldnt do anything to the label!! It might be a difference with stones which have the label glued to the stones....
If this is the case there are different methods which reach from soaking, vapouring to sealing....
Sealing is endless to a certain point, because once done its fixed to the paper.
You can use youre stone when you take it out of the box. Often they are not glued, if its glued it might be better to get the stone loosened from the glu. Even using the stone with water wont hurt the label here because its on the other side of the box.Last edited by doorsch; 04-04-2016 at 05:17 PM.

Thanked: 1Did the tuna oil...cat likes it, but the smell just gets worse and worse! Oh, maybe you meant tung oil?
My little boxed Escher stone was glued so tight that boiling it had no effect on the glue. I wish it could have let go, but the stone had been used with oil, and I had to get it out of there to deal with it ... so, I had to demolish the box. It wasn't in the greatest of shape, anyway.
Sometimes those stones are adhered something awful to those boxes. Good luck.
