Thanked: 235Honing Japanese razors, hone held in hand
I've beenhoning my own razors with varying degrees of success over the last few years. I prefer tohold the hone in my left hand and razor in the right hand. This I feel givesme the best control over the razor.
Recently I bought my first Kamisori. I understand that they are honed slightly differently to western razors. I have watched a couple of videos on utube to get an idea of how I should go about honing this new razor.
One thing all the videos have in common is that they all have the hone sitting flat ona table, not held in hand.
So my question is can a Kamisori be honed while holding the hone in hand, or will this produce too much of a smile? Does anyone elsehold thehone in hand while honing a Kamisori?

Interesting post. To tell the truth, irrespective of the type of razor being honed, I would never have considered holding the hone in one hand and razor in the other. I always place the hone on a surface and control the razor with both hands.

Thanked: 3215Don’t think it matters, personal preference.
I always hone razors with the hone, no matter the size on the bench.

Thanked: 13245For the finishing strokes I doubt it matters
But for me doing repairs and full bevel sets on so many Kamisori I like the absolute control of keeping the stone on the bench so I can get an accurate "Push" in exactly the area needed
