    Default King stones

What do we think of King stones? I'm still kicking the idea of retireing my lapping film. My department store diamond works ok for knives and chisels. I could stand a good 5k or 6k.
Is a King good enough for razors? Too good for chisels? Price is nice. I think if I was serious about a razor hone it would probably be a Norton.
30 bux is a nice price for a King and if I wanted to finish a chisel it wouldn't seem like sacrilege.

I have a King 1k and love it. The soak time on them is gawd awful though, around 20-25 minutes until it stops bubbling in water. I believe the finer grit stones are also just fine for razors.

Yea, they are fine, use a squirt bottle instead spray, in a plastic food tray and you don’t need a full soak.

Get a good finisher or finish on 1um film.

I concur that the soak time for a King seems to never end. However the 'Dry Time' is indeed an Eternity! I keep mine in a water bath of Distilled water that has had a Tablespoon of Chlorine Bleach PER GALLON added to it.

I got that tip from Glen (GSSIXGUN) and it doesn't hurt the hone in the least. I've been doing this for my King and my Norton 4/8K for years now.
Our house is as Neil left it- an Aladdin’s cave of 'stuff'.

I've got the smaller king 1k on the stand and all I do is run it under water for a minute and it's good to go. I believe the brick harrywally speaks of is different. I saw it at a razor meet up. It sure is a big hone.

I have a 1k Tojiro (clay based and like a King) that sits un-used now as I replaced it with a Chosera 1k. I have a King 8k Goldstone, a nice clay based stone, nothing wrong with it, but it doesn't see much action. I also have a 10k Icebear, once again clay based, but gives great feedback through the blade, both 8k and 10k come with slurry stones. Sadly I guess, I've moved to naniwa's and Suehiros, but I have no bad words for the Kings or any of the popular clay based systems. Cheers Bob

I've used 4 and 8k clay stones for over 30 years on chisels and planes and on razors for the last 6 years.

I shaved off the 8k for a long time. Clay stones have served me well.

Just finished honing a Giesen & Forsthoff Adoration Deluxe tonight. I started with a soft arkansas with slurry but I knew I needed to take my time on this razor—didn't want to worry about dilutions.

The King 1k brick did the job really well. Just X strokes until the bevel was set. Easy peasy. (except for the heel, and a little on the toe at the end). The light on the bevel was great! I actually cut my king 1k so I could use a tomo for slurry, but honestly, the stone is fine all in it of itself! I'm glad I didnt use it. Just throwing it out there. You can make it faster if need be. Name: IMG_0721.jpg
