Morley PITA
Having a little trouble trying to set the bevel on this one. About 40 passes on the 4000 Norton and it looks the same as before I started. One layer of tape on the spine.

Thanked: 481Gonna take a whole lot more than 40 passes on a Norton 4k. It can be done, but it's going to take quite a bit of work.

You can't set a bevel by pass count - it will need whatever it takes to join the bevels. Be sure to watch the tape and replace it when it shows wear.

Thanks, I will try to remember that. Tomorrow I will get the 1k norton out.
I just expected to see a little change after 40 passes. My Fredricks did.

Slurry to dilution on a 1k will do it.

Thanked: 3215What did you sand it with?
In effect you have dulled the edge, as said it will take some laps to set the bevel. You can do it with a 4k but a hand-sanded or buffed razor is exactly what 1k’s are for.
Personally when I hand sand or buff a razor I run a 1k diamond plate on the edge to dull it and prevent cut to the hand. You are going to have to hone it anyway, just a little insurance for safety.
You can do it with a 4k, it is more aggressive than most folks think, just use slurry, as said, 2 layers of tape to increase the angle and circles in sets of 20 with more pressure. Keep an eye on the tape it is easy to burn through the first layer. Once you set the bevel, then remove a layer and lighten up on the pressure to re-set the angle and edge again on the 1k. Use ink on the bevel to monitor your progress.
Nice looking razor, I find it easier to hone and strop with the scales on.

Thanks for the info. And yes, it's much easier with the scales on.

Ah the curse of smart phones.
I've set exactly 2 bevels on my Naniwa 5k. It is finer and a different company's abrasive representation, but such a pain in the butt that I swore to getting a 1k ASAP.
As far as no scales, I am always worried about ruining a freshly honed blade without scales. To much nervousness for me. Maybe tape a popsickle stick on the end, if no scales are available at the moment?
