I bow to the wisdom of the sages...

50 more it is -- of every stroke on every stone!

    Now there's a bevel!

You did lap the stones correct? Remember to wash the stone too, before honing on it. I always hit them with running water and brush the surface clean with my fingers to be sure it's free of foreign material.
No problems this time with proper rinsing and wiping of everything including the box/restraint.

Sorry, I just noticed what ELSE you wrote--namely, "on every stone!"

Do NOT do that. The extra strokes MAY be needed on the 1k and will do no harm at the bevel setting phase. When you get better at assessing the progress of your bevel setting, you can just stop when the bevels fully meet. Until then, there is no harm doing some extra strokes to make sure the task is done. However, you don't need those extra strokes on the other hones. They would not do harm on the 4k but could on the 8k.

GD's are made of terribly hard steel - not the best choice for learning to hone.
If you can un-ugly the grind of one of those, you are can do a great job on a regular razor in a fraction of the time.
My father was an engineer. He used to tell me that sharpening a straight razor is like trying to build a ladder to the moon out of a roll of aluminum foil.

GDGD's are notoriously "Off" but that thread should help with using the Nortons
I've recently been going back through the JaNorton 2012 thread, it is very helpful! I even watched Glen's video of the back of his shoulder while he laps his 4k and 8k stones, for a second time. I think that makes me an uber razor geek.
    State v. Durham, 323 N.W. 2d 243, 245 (Iowa 1982) (holding that a straight razor is per se a "dangerous weapon").

    I noticed that...

My first go at it had me wondering whether it was stainless steel.
Since I am very new to straight razors and have never encountered a stainless steel, that was just a guess.

Seems to me like they make them of both carbon and stainless. So it all depends on which you bought.

    THE MOMENT OF TRUTH...

    THE SHAVE!

Close to baby bottom smooth after the first pass.
Baby bottom smooth after the second pass.
No nicks, no abrasions (other than the usual slight razor burn.)

This GD razor (I love double entendres) looks like it just might serve me well!
