I have also used a form of a double bevel for honing. The other day I honed a very hard razor, that I do not believe, had ever had a bevel fully set, and had a ragged edge.

The edge would not come together, and I did not want to us a diamond plate for fear of chipping on the hard steel, later.

So I high angle honed an edge on a 1K, by holding the spine off the stone, about a quarter of an inch, creating a double bevel and a sharp edge.

Then, I honed it normally, on 2 pieces of tape and the edge came together quickly and evenly, because a rough edge had already been formed and I had much less metal to remove, and I just honed to the edge, flattened the bevel and refined the edge a bit.

The bevel was even, the edge straight and the razor shave very well.
