Thanked: 0Help Honing
Anyone near the dc metro area who could help with my honing skills? I have been trying to get a decent edge on a razor without much success. I have no problems using a razor, I just can't get them sharp! I must be missing something somewhere along the line, I just don't know where. I would also consider traveling up to an hour from my location.

I live in Stephens City which is about 1 hour and 26 minutes from you; west straight out 66. I occasionally work in DC but that might be a while and handing out straight razor lessons in D.C. is probably a capital offense (pun intended).
I just noticed your travel limit, but I'll leave my post anyway. Check mapquest.Last edited by AFDavis11; 06-11-2007 at 10:12 PM.

Thanked: 1Mac:
If there is any way you can hook up with Alan, I strongly recommend it. Alan has been a tremendous help to me and I can't speak highly enough of him. The time he took with me, the patience he displayed and his advice were all most helpful and greatly appreciated. My skills in honing jumped up a notch because of him.

If you can possibly drive to meet Alan, do it. He's one of our more patient, articulate members, and you'll learn a lot from him. The PMs and posts he's written in response to my questions would fill a book.

And coming around the turn, it's Josh in the lead by a nose. But Steve is running hard to the finish line... (Sorry, just notice our post counts are almost the same... )

Thanked: 0Thank you all so much for the feed back. I'm fortunate that Alan had some free time and I'm looking forward to meeting him and learning how to properly hone a razor. At least be able to reduce the learning curve a bit.
I have Norton 800, 1200, 3000, 8000, from a while back (never lapped) and recently purchased a Norton 4k/8k combination (which have been lapped), a 12k Japanese waterstone (never used), and a large Belgian Coticule. I also have a couple of strops and a paddle. I have been trying to hone for quite a while without much success. I am hoping that I would be able to learn well enough to be able to teach my young son in about 10 years.
