Thanked: 0chips from edge
How does one handle a chip from the edge. It is not large. Do you hone through it with a lower grit? Advice would be appreciated.

It depends how large a chip we're talking about. If it is indeed small some circular honing on a Norton 4K will remove it. Give us an idea of the size of the chip so we can better advise.

Thanked: 9This seems like a pretty decent chip, actually. It will take some time on the 4K for sure
Randy Tuttle has seen occasional subsequent microchipping with circles on a lower grit. (I myself use circular motion but this doesn't say much, really - and I'd rather use them on a higher grit Swaty to hone, not remove chips)
Good luck

Thanked: 0Chips
I'm pleased to report that the circular motions on the 4000 did the trick. Occasionally I lifted the spine off the hone slightly, but it did the trick. thanks for everyone's help.

Thanked: 9Good to hear the chip is gone.
Why did you lift the spine? It will be much harder to get a good shave-worthy edge now.
Good luck

Thanked: 2209Never, never, never lift the spine off the hone. The only thing you will accomplish is to round the edge and put an improper angle on the bevel.
Now you will need to do approx 25-50 laps on the 4K the reset the angle of the bevel.Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin
