still debating weather i should get one. i'm getting good shaves of a 8k and i heard somewhere that any thing past that is only about a 5% difference. is it really worth the money? posts like this are pushing me closer to the edge though.

Thanked: 4827I suggest you go to a meet and try one out. They are great places to see, feel, try all there is. They are also great social activities and the very best in learning opportunities.

From my super limited experience i am in love. I am getting shaveable edges off 8k and just wanted to know what is beyond. After running my go to razor on it and shaving its a difference that is noticable for sure. Just wiped the hair away. Rezdog has a great suggestion about going to a meet, i have no free time to do that right now so i just got one. Ill keep you posted further on my thoughts though if you like

A Nani 12 compared to an 8k really is a huge difference. Wouldn't go withou my 12k Nani.

Nani 12's are great finishers, and super-easy to use. Enjoy!

When I jumped into honing the first was a 4/8 norton. I don't think I used it more than 2 times. Then i jumped in with both feet. 1K the naniwa 3/8K combo and the 12K naniwa all SS stones. I used these and thought I had it down pretty good. What i considered great shaves off the 12K. I got good shaves off the 8K and very good shaves off the 12K. Then a friend ruined it all. He showed me the Suehiro 20K. There was as much difference between the 12K and the 20K as it was from the 8K to the 12K. I don't really know what will come next or if something else is out there. If not I'm fat and happy.

IMO, it really depends on what you are looking to do. If you are looking to just touch up and edge then you would not need 1k thru 12k. If you are looking to do restoration work then eventually you are going to need some stones but you by no means need to just jump in and spend a bunch of money on stones. I really wanted to when I first started and looking back I am glad I didn't. If you are just going to touch up your razor I would think a 12k would be plenty. I am sure there are guys with way more experience than I have GeorgeX these are just my thoughts and experience. I dabble in light resto work and bevel setting so I have 1k, 4k, 8k and 12k. Honestly I rarely use my 1k I use micro film to set my bevels which is another path you can go down and is a bit less expensive. But in reality a King 1k is like $20 on amazon. Pretty much the Norton 4k,8k is the gold standard. if you can get a shave ready comfortable edge from that and get reliable edges from that then graduate up to something finer. I think the Norton 4k, 8k combo is like $90 and you can set a bevel on 4k if need be just takes time, and the 8k polishes the edge just fine. I am no pro at honing these are simply my experiences. Good luck and don't be afraid to ask everyone on here is very helpful.

Thanked: 101I also use a 1K King & it works well for most razors but I have several razors that are of harder steel & the King is very slow on them. I also set the bevel on a stainless straight for a friend & it took forever. I am looking at a Shapton Glass or a Chosera 1K to make it a little faster to set bevel on these types of razors.
I watched Lynn's video on the Shapton Glass 1K bevel setter & really think that is the way I will go.
