A friend brought in an ugly beast. A hair stylist that makes house calls brought it to him. She said she couldn't find anyone that could hone it to shave ready. This razor had some of the worst home wear imaginable. First couple pases showed it was cutting at the belly but not the ends. Three layers of tape, the bevel was soon set. The second new bevel was nice and even. Sweet!
I wasn't a big fan of tape but I'm coming around. I made a mess of one of my razors on my new Nortons before it was properly lapped. I think its tape for me from now on.

When I was just starting to hone the tape saved my razors from ruin. The tell tale for me on that is that in the beginning I was putting so much pressure on the spine that the tape would wear quite quickly and need to be change often. Now when I hone my tape gets very little wear. It is the pressure that new honers put on the spine that causes that unsightly wear. Oddly enough the correction is the same as the prevention, tape. I think if you have done a lot of honing it may not be all that important to use tape, but tape saves razors both before and after the wear.
Nice job getting that old girl back to work.

A couple pics of the ol' girl in question. Took her for a drive tonight. All the fur fell off as advertised.
I've haven't found the maker anywhere. Anyone heard of them. Hairdresser is in Australia.

    Cheers
