Here is a post of a new guy taking a problem razor to shave ready. A little long, but full of good information for a new honer, with excellent micrographs, (Second Try at Honing).
Get some tape and good magnification.

Thanked: 433Also check for frown by holding it edge down on a known flat hone and check for light coming through between two contact points. I've seen a few factory fresh razors with frowns in the last few years
