Back to 4K, with J strokes and 2 layers of tape. Took about 80 strokes to fix the middle, and then I noticed a ding near the toe (likely bumped the plastic guard on the microscope, and did another 40 (with tape change) for than, and a final 20 strokes that are lighter. Shots of each side in hi rez and the edge:

Hopefully not too blurry at this magnification. Hard to hold steady.

And 25 strokes on the 12K with 2 layers (I did more than I planned, but was trying to make sure that it was pushing the water forward at the toe, so needed extra passes:

Blood spurting everywhere, huge rashes, and layers of skin missing...

Actually, the shave came out fine. Can't say it was smoother than the 8k. Seemed similar, but I'll take it as a success. Most importantly, it didn't take as long to bring it back.

Lesson learned on pressure...hopefully I'll check my notes next time I hone the next blade in a month or two.

Appreciate the advice and support everyone!

Thanx for the update. Seems your getting better at this stuff

As for pressure: Best general advice I can give is don't try too hard. It's a super thin piece of steel with a super thin edge. it shouldn't take much work unless it's a restoration.

Or a near wedge, like the blade I honed over the Summer (a Saunders).

That's the key. Wedges tend to have wider bevels that necessitate the removal of more steel, and you can use pressure to speed this process because of their relative rigidity. Thin hollow grounds are a different matter, pressure must be applied lightly and judiciously else you will flex the blade and shift the contact away from the very edge. I suspect that a lot of the issues you had with this blade earlier on with the honing not reaching the edge were mainly due to pressure.

On bevel set I'll agree with you but on finishing it's still a super thin edge & needs to be treated as such.
