Thanked: 0Advice Needed!
Good afternoon, I hope someone can advise me about a vintage razor I have just purchased, it's a "Golden Spur Razor" made in Sheffield, England. It appears to have a slight "Smile" I think that's what you call it. I have attempted to hone it and it appears to be quite sharp. Haven't shaved with it yet. Am I wise to continue with trying to get the blade completely flat? As I am completely new to honing your comments and advise would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time..

Thanked: 3795If you are asking if you should remove the smile, then NO, absolutely do not do that.
What do you have for hones?
Have you watched any honing videos?
Do you know how to do an advanced search in the members' list to find someone local for one on one help?

Thanked: 3226Can you post a photo of the razor? It would help us see how it was made. Generally a razor with a smile to the spine needs to be honed in a way that the edge/bevel follows the line of the spine. Even if the spine is straight and the edge has a curve/smile I would hone it to maintain the curve/smile.

There is nothing wrong in asking questions....the guys here are happy to help. By the questions that you are asking, I don't think honing is something you need to tackle yet. Even if
there was a need to take the smile out of the blade (and there is not), you would be delving into restoration, which is maybe the last skill you should acquire. Check the library and read up on refreshing a razor. That is where most guys start learning to sharpen razors.Last edited by Wayne1963; 12-20-2016 at 07:14 PM.
