Thanked: 0Coticule Honing, continiue or start over?
Hi, sorry for the typo in the title, English is not my mothertongue ^^
I have taken a picture from my razors edge.
If I strop it the way it is now on a canvas and leather it passes the HHT at most points, but the shave is awfull. Tugging, have to push the razor trough.
I'm a beginner at honing, and have just bought a coticule. The thing I wonder is do I have to continue honing, or should I go back to a lower grit hone?

Thanked: 3795Spend some more time on the 8k. When you believe you have done enough on it, then strop and shave off of it. If you cannot shave with it, then spend more time on the 8k. Don't move up to the coticule until the 8k edge shaves.
When you do go back to the coticule, do more strokes. Do 25-50 strokes minimum with slurry and then continue on with at least that many with water.

When I started honing a few years ago, I learned it on a coticule (and I am still happy about it today). I found this very helpful at the time: http://www.coticule.be/unicot.html Groeten aan Antwerpen

Thanked: 3795Let's say adequately shave. That does not mean with excessive pressure or any other sort of change from normal shaving. In reality, you can shave off of a proper 1k edge. As you progress up higher grits the shave simply becomes more comfortable.
I should add to my first post that it is rare that 10 strokes on any coticule is sufficient to accomplish much. In general, coticules are slow and often you will need to do a hundred or more strokes to accomplish much on an average coticule. They can make a very comfortable edge, but most of them do it slowly.Last edited by Utopian; 01-05-2017 at 07:17 PM.
