Thread: Best edge in a long time....

I have been using straight razors for a while and am pretty comfortable with them. However, I've never been able to hone an edge better than a butter knife...lol. I would have to rely on someone else to do it. I have a wealth of stones, strops, paddles, coticules, dvds and advice...what I lacked was someone to point me in the direction of sharp

I had the good fortune to meet (through this forum) a gentleman who goes by the handle ADavis11. He was very well recommended by this community. Well, I had some older razors that I wanted to bring back and a desire to learn a technique or at least someone to point me in the right direction. I got both.

I took a few razors that I had spent hours trying to get an edge on them over the years. (Actually, I thought they were beyond help...the spine on one of them must have been at least 1mm thiner on each side - you can picture the bevel). Anyway, I met with Alan and was amazed at how much he knew and could accomplish with just the 4k8k norton. He took several hours to patiently watch and correct my technique. He was able to sharpen razors I thought were gone in short order. I left with a much better understanding of what I was doing wrong and what to look for as I sharpened a razor. I also left with the feeling that he could get an edge on a piece of cheese...and I would never be that accomplished.

Alan, if you're cruising through the posts tonight...THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOUR TIME. You are incredibly talented with a hone and I plan on sending a few more your way. I may even stop by myself if I can to ask you for more critique on my technique.

So glad you got a chance to meet Alan. He helped me immensely via PM and I, too, was impressed with the amount of knowledge he possesses and how much can be accomplished just with a Norton 4k/8k.

After "training" with Alan, I felt like I graduated from honing school.

Now, if he ever does get an edge on a slice of cheese, it will have to be cheddar..........................

Yep, Alan is pretty much the Virginia SRP ambassador. He got a hold of me when I first started. It is a great thing that he takes the time to do this. He definately represents the true spirit of SRP. I still owe him a beer or two if my wife will ever let me out of the house again.
