I never have seen a barber hone instruction sheet recommend more than 6 strokes. Many leave it vague at a "few strokes," but many others specify a range from 3 to 6 strokes. In the case of this Lakeside hone, it declares both a few strokes and 3 to 4 strokes.

Barber hones can produce a good edge, but they are aggressive. For that reason only a few strokes should be done between edge assessments to avoid damaging the edge.
