Thanked: 3215Yes, the bevel and more importantly the edge, looks lots better in the last photo.
Here is an interesting post by Alex Gilmore on his blog on honing on Jnat slurry and why they can produce jagged edges. (Why develop a false edge on purpose?)

Here also, are some micrographs and another post by Alex that also, might help you understand what can be happening to your edge.

That Blog is a bit rambling and is bouncing back and forth between Razors and Tools
But please tell me that we are not once again reading the same Develop a Burr / False Edge then break it off and refinish the edge that was proved multiple times as being useless for SR's
Please tell me I am reading it wrong, and we're not going to re-hash that drivel for the umpteenth time...Last edited by gssixgun; 04-22-2017 at 03:19 PM.

I'm reading the same conclusion as you are Glen. U-Y-V. That's certainly not how I've been taught to hone a razor's edge.
Seems like a waste of good steel.Last edited by Speedster; 04-22-2017 at 05:30 AM. Reason: Added final comment

Thanked: 28Read the blog about the false edge. I am going to file that along with everything else I am reading about this process of honing.
I do not know enough or have enough experience yet to have an opinion, so at this point I will incorporate all reasonable input and "hone, shave, repeat" until I have some solid experience.
When I was working on my doctorate I was constantly being reminded that since I had not proven that I could utilize data and proven methods to arrive at a conclusion (i.e. passed my dissertation defense) I did not HAVE an opinion to give- I was merely quoting and studying the research of others.
I now apply that concept to everything I do that is new- in this case honing. While I hold an Ed.D doctoral degree in education and am considered an expert in my field (along with 30 years of teaching music and 40+ years of being a musician) I have roughly 3 months of experience with honing, therefore I really have nothing to offer advice-wise and am limited to posting my research, keeping my mouth shut and ego in check, and receiving guidance from those with more experience.
At some point I hope to merit enough learning to add to the conversation but I feel it will be a very long time before I am ready to advance my ideas as fact. In the meantime I will enjoy my successes and appreciate ALL of your advice and guidance along the way.
Have a great weekend all!
