I dare you to set the bevel on a 1k hone and then just strop it and shave with it. Please report back here with your results. You just might be surprised!

Done it before. But it's been a while and surely I've gotten better at this game since. I'm game to do it again. In fact I'll do it twice, since I have a Shapton 1K inbound. It'll just have to wait a day or two for my beard to grow back in.
But I suppose I can pick a razor to drag across the old Norton and get one prepped tonight.
I did do this once before. Very early on in my honing Glen told me to help learn when the bevel is actually set to do this. I set my bevel, or so I thought, test and back to the hone, and test and back to the hone and then shaved. It was not a smooth shave, but it did shave with limited effort, once I had the bevel correct. Now that I have been honing for a while, I think I will accept this challenge and get back to you tomorrow. I am most curious if I can get a more smooth shave from the 1K than my memory of that first experience.
Did a WTG with a 1k about a month ago. It wasn't as bad as I expected, but I definitely had some burn afterwards.
It definitely reinforces the idea of shave the lather, not the skin.

in my limited honing experience, relating to another thread,, this is how I get a good test on a bevel set if I can shave off of a 1k then its set. but I haven't don't it often cause I don't have any razors that need a bevel set,, their done and they stay that way, so a 12k is all I get to use anymore or I just mail it out but the 1k challenge is accepted again if I can find a razor to do it to Hi Ron Tc

It was not a great shave. I have had rougher shaves before I really knew how assess my edges. I have to thank Geezer for the loupe and Catsrentshaving for showing me how to use it properly, and Glen for the videos and the challenge initially. Since then it has been practice practice practice. I can feel my face and say for absolute certainty, this was not a very close shave, but closer than I could get with a cartridge and much more irritation free, in fact the aftershave did not burn like I had expected.
What IS that wore-out thing? My, you have scratched the strop!

That my friend is a very old Henckels 8.
The "scratches" on the strop actually came from the heel of my hand :-0
They are from yesterday when I was getting it ready for its maiden voyage.
Apparently I need better lotion, or a better scrub brush.

Plenty to shave with and simple stropping and shaving is the current program.

Today is my Friday.
I got a brand new chorsea1k that hasnt even been lapped.
Being so new to honing there is no telling how this will turn out but im willing to give it a go. I know i can find a razor of some sort to use.
Crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. Ive tried to shave off a 1k before but i dont think i had gotten the bevel right in the first place so it was a no go. Hoping to do better this time.

I thought I would push the limits a little more…
I spent 3 minutes on a gold dollar fresh off the grinder and honed it all the way up to a 600 grit edge. The spine was taped first with green tape and "finished" with black tape. Then I stropped it on newspaper for 10 strokes to clear off residual grit. This was followed by 50 strokes on linen and 100 on leather.
I lathered up some Tabac and did a two pass shave. I got a good enough shave with only a bit of irritation on a tiny patch near my adam's apple.

I think that if I stropped my razor with cerium 100x and then another 100x on linen and 300x more on leather it would be a comfortable shave. I can certainly see how simply using pastes and a 1or 4K hone, along with regular stropping, could keep you shaving forever.
I have attempted this before and will join in for another go but will have to wait for the weekend to clean and hone up a razor.
I would try this but I do not own a 1k hone. Poor me!
What is your lowest grit hone? Use that, and then strop and shave, if you never have done that.
