Default Iphone as a Lighted Digital Magnifier?

    https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/16/t...lass.html?_r=0

I don't know if anyone has seen this or tried it. I didn't know it, but IOS 10 comes with a lighted, digital magnifier (which is a bonus in addition to the endless text gifs and poop emojis). Anyway,I turned on the magnifier and played around with the magnification and lighting, but the sensor keeps trying to refocus the image on my screen, rendering it virtually useless.

Maybe somebody else has figured out a way to make it useful for something other than reading a menu in a dark restaurant?

At any rate, I just stumbled across the NYT article while looking around at magnification options beyond my little $4 ebay "microscope" that is so hard to use.

    Any thoughts?

This is the best I was able to get with my iiPhone 7 - not nearly as useful as my lighted 30x loupe. Image is of a Jnat edge on a hollow ground blade.

I just edited to add the actual link that I forgot in the OP-sorry.

And if the Iphone magnifier is useless for edge diagnostics, anybody want to chime in on the other best options currently available? I'm looking at the $15 Carson and its clones on Amazon and Ebay, various loupes, etc. Thanks-Aaron

This is what I've been using for several years now. I have other, more expensive loupes, but the lighting makes this on the handiest to use. BTW, I almost never use the 60x lens, the 30x is easier to focus and shows me everything I need to see.
