I'm going to take a guess- without seeing the side of the stone (if you post that you can get better input) it is a natural coticule with rouge du salm on the back. There is some crazing on the top of the yellow coti side. I don't think there is any way to evaluate it other than hone on it and see what kind of edge it produces. I am interested to hear others points of view.

Here's a side shot. I'll wet it when I get home from work. Thank you gentleman.

Yes I believe so. Fits the criteria to my limited knowledge.

It definitely is a barber hone and not a coticule. I have an unlabeled one with dark swirls like that one but I have no information about it.

Thank you. As you seem to be one of the primer authorities, your knowledge is greatly appreciated and respected. Where would you rate it? Good bad fair?

@utopian For my own education- I see that from the side it is not a coticule. Was another clue the crazing? I don't think a coticule would do that- more of a synthetic thing?

For the OP there is a lot of information on barber hones, but there are so many different ones sometimes you can't find info on a particular one. Keep in mind too that the same hone could be manufactured under different names (resellers)

I have no idea as I have not used that hone. I have one with an appearance similar to the dark one, but it is not the same. It may seem like a cop out on my part, but the only way to assess it is to try it out and see how the shave is.
