    I think the most valuable lesson I learned early on was about pressure. We've heard here on this thread about needing few strokes on higher grit stones. That is of course true, but even more vital IMHO is the issue of pressure. When you believe your bevel is done, your final dozen strokes on the 1k should be the same as the last few strokes on your 12k. Very light, weight of the blade only, barely touching the hone.

    And those same transitional light strokes also should be done on any other hones in between.
